Packaging Targets Youth

Share:

As the fall season progresses and holidays draw near, new products are going to be displayed in stores, each appealing to a specific audience. This is an important time of year to pay attention to what products your children are exposed to and what advertisements are targeting them. There are many adult products, like alcohol and cannabis, that come in packaging that appeals to youth.

According to Youth 2 Youth, alcohol packaging often boasts sweet or fruity flavors in bright colors, and research shows that these elements often attract youth. They may also use health buzzwords or contain caffeine, both of which are popular trends for younger generations. There are many brands that have partnered with alcohol companies or added alcohol to their products, blurring the lines between which products are kid-friendly and which ones are not. The packaging and flavoring of these products mask the label and taste of alcohol, making the drinks seem youthful and fun rather than adult-only.

Cannabis packaging also often appeals to youth. Some states, like Missouri, have laws that restrict cannabis products to plain and clearly labeled packaging, but most states do not. One study found that out of 256 edible cannabis products, 15% were knockoffs of popular food or candy products. Additionally, 91% of packages had flavors labeled, 35% had flavor imaging, and 23% had people or animals on them, all of which attract the attention of youth.

Pay attention to the products and advertising that your child is exposed to. Start conversations about packaging that targets youth and make it clear that these products are for adult use only. Make sure your child understands the dangers of alcohol and cannabis, no matter how kid-friendly the products and packaging look. Keep any alcohol or cannabis products in your home stored safely away from children so that they don’t accidentally ingest something harmful. Many products are trying to get your child’s attention, but you can equip them to say no.
